PPC [Pay Per Click]

What is it? PPC Ads appear with Ad before the URL to identify this is a PAID listing and not organic

Usually, there will be THREE Ad listings at the top and similar at the foot of the first page and Ads on subsequent pages that didn’t make it to the first page due to lower bidding price or other reasons.

You write the ad text to make the Ad appealing to be clicked on that’s your bait to state free trial or discounts etc.

In short, you bid a price you are prepared to pay on a search phrase that enables your ad to appear on the results at the top or bottom of the first page that delivers a click to your website and a potential customer. Similar to an auction but on a search term instead of an item.

When you bid a price for first-page placement the Adwords system will tell you what you need to bid to get on the first page but cannot guarantee it as you are competing against your competitors who want exactly the same. Unfortunately unlike an auction room where you can see your competitor’s bids, this is done online and internationally with bidders will change their bids strategically at any time so you need to monitor your campaign as you can be outbid at any time and your traffic can drop immediately.

PPC is certainly the only guaranteed method to get first-page placement if you have the means to do so and understand what you doing.

You can set:-

  • Daily budgets once spent your Ad is removed till tomorrow
  • You set the bid price per key phrase and you can have a campaign of as many search terms as you want.
  • You can select the geographic area to display
  • Mobile and PC
  • Days of the week you don’t want to show your ads or times such as 10 pm to 5 am as you wish.
  • Broad match or exact match this is where you can grant Google license to display your ad or search terms that a similar or exact which is preferred as you can easily spend your money on broad match which google loves you to do.

Bidding on search terms in its self is a skill.

For example, if you make trainers you could bid on

  1. Trainers  This would be expensive as too generic
  1. Sports Trainers  This could be expensive as again its generic
  1. Female Sports Trainers  This specifies gender to reduce the bid costs
  1. Female Sports Trainers in bright pink  This would be the lowest cost as its type/gender/colour/shade specific

The #4 is known as a ‘Long Tail Phrase’ you should always try to include phrases your prospective customers would search for as these will be the specific and lowest cost and if they land on the page displaying the pink ladies sports trainers the probability of a purchase is high. That’s what you specify the url of the product or service that matches EXACTLY the bid phrase.

Google operates a quality scoring to check your ad matches the product on the URL as misleading ads that state one thing and delivery another such as a home page instead will score lower and Google is about delivering matched results to searches.
